I’m back at the OU trying to get into the swing of things. I still have no clue about my main research study … and I need to firm that up quickly, because think I need to get that started by March.
Whilst I was on holiday I did some analysis of the videos since I was writing a PME paper – not sure how well that went but got it in. I listened to all the audios for the students when they were doing the practice question since I thought perhaps that is where the initial interaction with the software is occurring and the learning. First of all found for two of the participants (J and Cl) who had some mathematics background and had both started with the grey-box both looked to see how the expected values was being calculated. The rest of them didn’t look at grey-box very long.
I think for the people who didn’t know any of the maths, they only started to tried to understand how to calculate the expected value when they were doing the white-box (eg. R, Ch, G, Cl). I’m not too sure if there were much understanding such as conceptual but rather more procedural. I think this might be reflected in most of them not getting the conceptual problems right except Ch. Not sure if that is the configuration of the (BB, GB or WB) or something that is intrinsic to him although R also questioned about understanding expected value and had similar configuration (BB, WB and GB). Think my data is too little to make any good conclusions

Topic: Pilot Study
Well, I’ve already been able to do two participants in my pilot study and I have four lined up for next week. So, it looks promising since I wanted to have 6 students. Not too sure about the software section mixed with mathematics seemed to be getting so far a mixed way of doing things – keeping an eye on it at the moment

Well … got my software licence on Monday but didn’t get the activation keys till yesterday – although haven’t tried it out as yet – but hopefully it works out 😀 … got to try it soon.
Had to return the laptop since the loan finished yesterday – although I could have renewed it but since I’m using Andreas’ computer didn’t think I needed it …
I got a free activation key for the vemotion as well since I told them I needed two copies … and they were kind enough to do that for me.
I also sent out the email to my participants (only four of them – got to go find 2 others!) and they said they’ll be willing to do it, so got to set up some times and dates to do it.
Yesterday got my email survey account set up by Adam J. and Gill gave me the templates this morning – so was able to create the demographics questionnaire this morning – I’ve tested it and it seems to be working. So, things are looking alright at this point.

I am getting a bit anxious about my vemotion software that IET supposedly ordered but can’t seem to get a hold of the licence as yet since it is with paypal … its been 3 weeks since they ordered it but although been asking Fil about it, there hasn’t been anything positive feedback as yet.
On the plus side, Jonathan has showed me a software called Netviewer which seems quite promising for remote observation. Jonathan is actually going to be using Netviewer for remote observation in the same way I am going to do it, and he suggested we can write something up later on the differences we’ve found. It says it has high security so wondering if it will be easier to use behind the OU’s firewall than the Windows messenger. It also has a VoIP but not sure if I can record this VoIP with vemotion … will have to check it out with Jonathan, once I get the software.

Topic: Thesis writing
Well, my writing came to a full stop when I decided to go to the TELMA workshop and haven’t done anything since on it … I’ve only managed a measly 1850 words … well, it is still more that I had originally, I was thinking of reviewing it and then rewriting the chapter, but not sure how productive that would be … I still have to rewrite my pilot study which I have put aside for quite awhile.
To be fair, I did do the canonical correlation between the two questionnaires that John suggested, but can’t make head or tail of how I should proceed to analyse it, and if there is anything of significance between the two questionnaires

Well, I’ve decided to venture into a new phase of my pilot studies, to test out my remote observation methodology, so, to do this, I decided to create some problems for people to do, whilst I’m observing them.
I’m not sure what the problems are going to be as yet – but have made an excel file which calculates the expected values of lotteries in black-box, white-box and grey-box mode – just got to get the problems to see what happens (mostly using VBA – went to a VBA training workshop last week so using some of that knowledge!).I don’t want to write it here – because planning to use Gill, Rebecca and Cling to help me – so don’t want to give them a head start – but going to create the problems elsewhere – and write about them after the study

Topic: Data Analysis
So, back to my pilot study – still have no clue what my data is saying – got too much factors that’s all I could figure … getting more confused by the moment – at first thought to do covariate analysis but that has got me even more confused – I think I’m going to go simple and build from that.
Wish me luck :D.
